Everyone hates having chapped lips. The pain that comes from dry cracked lips is enough to drive anyone crazy. Though many people experience chapped lips there are some who have a severe form that is called Angular Cheilitis. Angular Cheilitis can be caused in several ways including both fungal and bacterial infections.

Here are some ways that you can tell if you have Angular Cheilitis. If you have cracks or fissures in the corners of you mouth you could possibly have the illness. Along with the cracks there is also redness and swelling. The corners of your mouth may be tender and sore. Sores or ulcers may also develop in the area. These sores may start to bleed or even release pus. The skin in the corner of your mouth may start to swell.

Other problems that you might experience if you have Angular Cheilitis include pain while eating, talking or smiling. Activities like eating and talking can re-open sores making them susceptible to infection. The sores that develop in the corner of your mouth may begin to crust over and scab. With the constant cracking and healing of the area can also cause the corners of your mouth to itch.

Angular Cheilitis can be diagnosed by either a doctor or dentist. Depending on what causes the disease, there are different ways to diagnose it. Some cases are caused by ill fitting dentures that don’t properly support the muscles in the face. Your dentist can diagnose the problem by judging the fit of your dentures. The problem may also occur from certain vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. Your doctor can test you for these things in correlation with cheilitis.

Cheilitis is either a fungal and bacterial infection. The fungal infection is caused by the same fungus that causes a yeast infection. Your doctor can test a culture of the area to see if you have the bacteria present. The doctor may also do a blood test to see if you have an immune system deficiency which can manifest itself through cheilitis. The doctor or dentist may also ask you about your personal habits like licking the corners of your mouth too much or biting your lips frequently.

Angular Cheilitis can be treated in several different ways depending on the cause. If you notice the symptoms of cheilitis you can go to your doctor or dentist to have it diagnosed. You do not have to put up with the irritation and the pain of cheilitis.

Angular cheilitis treatment depends on its cause. Here’s a look at the various methods of treating this condition on the basis of the cause of infection.

Cause 1:
Angular cheilitis is due to Candida infection, which is yeast.

The treatment includes topical antifungal gel and steroids such as Mycolog II. A second version of this steroid is Mycostatin®. Both the versions contain antifungal called Nystatin and steroid called triamnicolone acetonide. The antifungal destroys the fungus while the steroid eases swelling, redness, itching, and pain. However, you need to watch out for the side effects of the steroid. Besides, the topical cream has to be applied very close to the mouth. So, take care you don’t ingest it.

Cause 2:
Ill-fitting dentures cause angular cheilitis.

The dentures themselves may serve as the breeding ground for bacteria. Ill-fitting dentures should be at once fixed by the dentist. Also, you should soak your dentures overnight in some antiseptic solution to avoid bacterial infection.

Cause 3:
Chapped lips cause angular cheilitis

This usually happens with kids who often have a habit of licking their lips. Sometimes, high fever in children may also trigger this condition. The best way to treat cracked lips is apply lip balm to it. You can also apply Aloe Vera to the affected area. While your lips are chapped, it’d be wise to avoid lipstick or flavored gloss. You can use unflavored gloss though.

Cause 4:
Bacteria staph causes angular cheilitis

The treatment is an antibiotic medication like a topical gel or cream. One example is miconazole gel. It’s also anti-fungal.

Cause 5:
HIV is the cause

If you’re suffering from blisters continuously at the corners of your mouth, there’s a possibility that your immunity has gone down, which might be due to HIV infection. The best thing to do would be to enhance your body’s immunity by taking vitamin supplements, which are good immunity system boosters.

So, now you realize that you should never ignore cracked lips! A small lip problem can turn into an annoying infection. And this is around your mouth meaning you can’t hide it!

Angular cheilitis is not something rare. Millions of people suffer from this condition every year. It’s also known as cheilosis, or perleche, or angular stomatitis. Medical science has conducted research that shows that this condition may be caused due to vitamin and iron deficiencies. Often, it happens more to older people who go through a loss of vertical dimension on account of teeth loss. Most of the cases of angular cheilitis occur due to sheer negligence of people towards caring for their lips. Often, when their lips dry, they hardly notice. When they get cracked lips, they lick them. This is a direct invitation to fungus and yeast to grow at the corners of the mouth causing this condition.

Signs of Angular Cheilitis

When you notice the following signs of this condition, you better start doing something about it or it may lead to embarrassment and lower self-esteem.

•	Sores on the lips and corners of mouth
•	Splitting of corners or the inside of the mouth accompanied with pain
•	Bleeding when opening the mouth wide

Angular cheilitis can affect your social life adversely. The lesions and fissures are prominent and make your face unappealing. Thus, it decreases your confidence and you may not want to attend a social function or even go out in public. There are many people who make fun of sufferers of this condition, as the fissures may give a weird look to your mouth.

Anyways, we aren’t going to discuss the impolite ways of such people who laugh at others’ distress. If not for them, then at least for your own health’s sake, you must take immediate medical help.

Don’t think that this condition will pass away by itself. It may even recur several times a year. Moreover, it can last for months! There have been cases where the condition lasted for many years!

Treatment

Your doctor may prescribe 1% hydrocortisone, which is a topical cream. However, many people find this ineffective in treating their condition. Worry not. There are alternative treatments available. The saddest thing is that many sufferers are ignorant of them. Hence, it’s important to either consult your doctor or search online.

There is a simple, safe, and painless treatment that kills the candida bacteria, which is responsible for the infection, by isolating it and creating an unfavorable environment for it. This treatment is inexpensive and makes use of household items.

Do not suffer in silence. Get ready to fight angular cheilitis now!

Most of the people are ignorant of the basic information about angular cheilitis. Here is a set of questions that would enlighten you on this condition and clear your common doubts you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is angular cheilitis?

A: This is an inflammatory lesion occurring at the corners or sides of mouth. It is marked with red, crusty rashes around your mouth corners. At times, there may be bleeding from these cracks when you open your mouth. In severe cases, pus may form in these cracks. The condition is painful and causes a lot of discomfort.

Q: What are the causes of angular cheilitis?

A: Doctors have not been able to find the exact cause for this condition. However, some sources believe that vitamin and iron deficiency is the cause. This, again, is denied by certain other sources. Ill-fitting dentures are also believed to be the cause. They lead to the collapse of face or mouth. Some sources even put forward the possibility of serious causes like sexually transmitted disease including AIDS.

One thing is certain – this condition is caused by bacteria or fungus. However, research is still on to ascertain whether the cracks occur first and then are inflicted by bacteria or fungi, or whether the cracks itself are caused by fungi or bacteria.

Q: Who are prone to angular cheilitis?

A: First of all, those who lick their chapped lips are certainly paving the way for this condition, if they don’t stop their habit now! Secondly, those who eat unhealthy diet expose themselves to vitamin and iron deficiencies, which are known to cause this condition. People suffering from diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism also fall “prey” to fungus or bacteria attacks. Those with incorrectly fixed dentures must get them fixed properly. They are heavily prone to develop this condition!

Q: How do you come to know its angular cheilitis?

A: When you notice cracks around your mouth, you better pay attention to them. If they hurt, you are on your way to develop this condition. Also, when you open your mouth wide and there is splitting accompanied by bleeding, that’s a sign of cheilosis. Sometimes, you also get bumps.

In a nutshell, dryness or cracking of lips, or anything wrong at the corners of your mouth should be given immediate attention. In the initial stages, the treatment is as simple as applying lip balm on your lips and taking a balanced diet to check deficiencies. You should not let your chapped lips turn into a harboring ground for bacteria and fungus. Ignore these signs and you’ll develop angular cheilitis!

Only the sufferer knows the pain of angular cheilitis. It starts like a harmless rash that might deceive you into thinking that it’ll go away. Slowly, it develops into painful cracks around the corners of your mouth. And you’re left wondering what’s happening to you.

It starts from cracked lips and develops into angular cheilitis. Medically speaking, it’s the swelling of labial commissures (relax; they are just the corners of your mouth). Although the condition is not life threatening, it hits hard on your confidence and appearance. Besides, it’s painful. Also, at times, the condition gets too stubborn to go away by itself. There have been cases in which the condition has even lasted for five long years!

Causes

Medical experts have still not been able to dig out the exact cause of this condition. However, they have put forward certain reasons based on their studies. They are candidiasis, iron deficiency, malnutrition, Glucagonoma, and others. Patients of hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus are also more prone to developing this painful condition.

The other causes of angular cheilitis are:

•	Constant licking of lips and corners of mouth
•	Saliva accumulation around the mouth that creates a favorable environment for yeast and fungus to thrive
•	Incorrect fixing of dentures

Symptoms

You can sniff danger lurking around the corners of your mouth if you notice:

•	Bumps
•	Dry and flaky skin
•	Cracks that are painful
•	Chapped lips for a long period of time
•	Splitting which may lead to bleeding, while opening your mouth wide

Angular cheilitis is neither contagious nor something serious. However, it might lead to embarrassment, as it mars the beauty of your face. You may not want to attend a social event with fissures around your mouth!

The best way is to catch hold of this condition right from the beginning. As soon as you notice dry skin at the corners of your mouth or chapped lips, you should take treatment for it. The initial treatment is simple. Applying lip balm and avoiding licking lips work wonders in thwarting the development of angular cheilitis in its early stages.

In case you find that your home remedies are not working and the cracks are getting painful and persistent, you shouldn’t ignore the situation. Immediately consult your doctor. Your condition might be due to some other cause like vitamin or iron deficiency or even AIDS!

So, the next time you stick out your tongue to lick your lips, hold on! You might be paving the way for angular cheilitis!

Are your lips cracked and chapped? This could well be the starting stage of angular cheilitis. A large number of people tend to ignore lip care. When their lips become dry, they simply lick them.

Little do they realize that they are creating a favorable environment for yeast and fungus to grow through their licking process, which may lead to cheilosis! Besides, the more you lick your lips, the more they crack. You end up with painful, chapped lips and cracks at the corners of your mouth.

Understanding Your Lips

To understand the importance of caring for your lips to avoid angular cheilitis, you must first understand what your lips actually are. They are associated in many ways to the rind on the remnants of your system, with the exception that lips don’t secret normal oils to keep them moist. Therefore, they are prone to go dry:

when the weather is cold

when they are exposed to wind as well as scorching sun

when you lick them frequently

when your lipstick causes allergic reaction on them

when they get sore

You may be surprised, but sexually transmitted diseases, which include HIV, can also be the culprit behind chronic chapped lips leading to angular cheilitis. You need to sit up and take notice when your lips:

get dried and cracked due to lack of moisture

bleed

are painful

get highly sensitive and tender

appear rough and red

start peeling

Home Remedies For Angular Cheilitis

There are several home remedies for angular cheilitis. The initial stages of this condition can be easily treated at home. The only thing is that you need to do something about it and not let it be.

Do this:

Apply unflavored lip balm or gloss over the lips

Avoid the use of flavored tooth paste.

Make use of a humidifier that moistens your lips.

Increase your intake of water.

Cut a piece of cucumber and rub it on your lips.

Rub neem leaf distill on the affected area.

Aloe vera gel also works wonders, try it.

Increase your intake of vitamin A. This is because one of the reasons of angular ceilitis is deficiency of vitamin and iron. Eat lots of tomatoes, carrots, and green leafy vegetables.

Consume vitamin juice. It contains juice of carrot, spinach, and tomatoes; 1 tbsp. water cress; 2tbsp. wheat microbe oil; 1 tbsp. nutritional yeast.

Include whole grains, legumes, and nutritional yeast in your diet.

Avoid heavy cosmetics.

Avoid lipstick for a while.

Do this and angular cheilitis will bid adieu to your lips!

Apply olive oil on the lips. Some people believe that Vaseline only makes your lips drier.

Rub unsalted butter on cracked lips.

This one can sound a little harsh – but applying some table salt on your lips followed by olive oil is said to give major relief.

Aloe Vera gel on lips with cheilosis heals them, as does vitamin E oil

For angular cheilitis that is painful, honey on the lips can help

Apply cocoa butter on the cracked lips

Rub lips with cheilitis with a slice of cucumber.

Preferably consult a dermatologist before you go in for angular cheilitis home remedies since you don’t want to discover that one of the ingredients did not agree with you.

Keeping your lips moisturized is the most important thing in angular cheilitis. While going out, it is advisable to use a lip balm that includes sunblock since the sun can be quite harsh on lips with cheilosis. Of course, licking your lips often is better avoided since you will only make them drier.

Another effective angular cheilitis home remedy is drinking plenty of water so that you are properly hydrated. Some people even use a humidifier in the house to keep the air around them moist.

It is well known that cheilosis can also be because of vitamin B 12 deficiencies, so a diet that is rich in vitamins could make a big difference in the long run. For those who wear dentures that don’t fit properly, the outcome could be painful angular cheilitis. In such cases it is better to talk to the dentist and get the dentures readjusted so that you can eliminate the cause.
It is not healthy to nurture angular cheilitis. Home remedies really work and are readily available and worth a try since they are safe and natural. Moreover, they don’t cost much and regular care can prevent cheilitis.

Angular Cheilitis or Cheilosis is a painful inflammation at the corners of the mouth. It can cause cracking and bleeding at the mouth corners that can become infected with a yeast infection or crusted over and sore. Those who suffer from this condition know just how much these annoying symptoms can affect your life.

Cheilosis can make it difficult to open your mouth. Opening even a small amount can cause pain or bleeding. This makes it difficult to talk and eat. Acidic foods can be especially irritating to the area. If it is difficult to speak then a person tends to isolate themselves from others. It is a condition difficult to hide because the mouth is such a prominent feature in our communication with others.

Those suffering with symptoms know the embarrassment of someone commenting that they have some food or something else on the corners of their mouth. Young children with cheilitis tend to pick at the area or constantly lick it which only aggravates the condition. Finding the right treatment depends on finding the root cause.

Angular Cheilitis can occur in older people with improper fitting dentures which allow saliva to leak from the corners of the mouth. Those who lick their lips frequently will allow saliva to gather at the corners of the mouth making a perfect environment for a yeast infection to develop. Very young children who use a pacifier may develop Cheilosis because of the constant presence of saliva around the mouth. It can also develop because of deficiencies in the B vitamins or iron deficiency. Obtaining a proper diagnosis is important to curing the problem.

Those who suffer with the symptoms of Angular Cheilitis may feel self conscious if people stare at them. Those with jobs that require them to talk to other people face-to-face, may find it difficult to not feel self conscious about the problem. Teenagers may deal with cruel remarks and comments from their peers.

It is not a serious or life threatening disease, but it does impact the social well being of a person. It often is mistaken for cold sores and others think it might be contagious but it is not.

Understanding the condition and finding the underlying cause in order to obtain proper treatment will help those affected by Angular Cheilitis to remove the negative impacts of this condition from their lives. They will return to feeling less self-conscious about their appearance and speaking and eating will not be so difficult.

We have all had chapped lips and it is no fun. Your lips are dry, cracked and sore. Unfortunately some people experience worse than your average chapped lips. There is a disease called Angular Cheilitis which is a severe form of chapped lips. Cheilitis is characterized by sores and swelling in the corners of the mouth. There is treatment for the disease and once it is started it usually doesn’t take that long to clear up.

There are certain characteristics that make people more susceptible to the disease. People who where dentures are more likely to develop the disease especially if the dentures don’t fit correctly. If your dentures don’t support the muscle in your face then moisture can get caught in the corners of your mouth and cause a bacterial infection. People who frequently lick or bite their lips are also more likely to develop the disease. Some other health issues can make you more likely to develop the disease. Diabetes, immune system deficiencies, certain vitamin deficiencies and anemia can make you more susceptible.
The symptoms of Angular Cheilitis include cracks and fissures in the corners of the mouth. Someone who has the disease will also experience swelling and pain in the area. The cracks can turn into open sores which can become infected and ooze pus. The cracks can also become so deep that they begin to bleed. Having these sores causes pain when talking, eating or smiling. With the constant healing and re-injury of the sores the corners of the mouth can also itch. All in all it is an unpleasant situation.

This disease can be caused by several different things. It can result from a fungal infection caused by the same fungus responsible for causing yeast infections. It can also be caused by a bacterial infection from the bacteria responsible for staph infections. Ill fitting dentures and frequent licking of the corners of the mouth also can cause the disease. Anemia, diabetes, other vitamin deficiencies and immune system problems can make adults more likely to get the disease. Young children and infants run a higher risk of the disease from thumb sucking, bottle feeding and sucking on pacifiers.

There are different treatments for the disease depending on the cause of it. The bacterial infection can be treated through antibiotics. The disease can also be treated by various medications and ointments. The fungal infection can be treated by anti-fungal ointment. Once treatment begins the condition usually clears up quickly. If you have Cheilitis you don’t have to just live with it. There is treatment available to help get rid of the pain and irritation.

Dry cracked lips are painful and irritating. Even the slightest cracking of your lips causes serious discomfort. There is actually a severe form of chapped lips that is called Angular Cheilitis. Cheilitis is characterized by cracks or fissures in the corners of the mouth that are sore and swollen. These sores can become infected and scabbed over. The question is what exactly causes this condition?

Angular Cheilitis can actually come about in several different ways. Two primary ways that this condition is caused is through either a fungal or bacterial infection. The bacterial infection is caused by the same bacterium that causes Staph infections. The fungal infection is caused by the same fungus that causes yeast infections. Viral infections can also cause this disease. Antibiotics, anti-fungal treatments and other ointments can help treat these infections.

Certain bad habits like chewing on or frequently licking your lips will cause irritation which can eventually lead to the disease. The frequent licking makes the skin raw when exposed to cold, dry or windy weather. People who wipe or play with the corners of their mouth frequently also can develop the disease. The constant wiping puts them at risk for developing the sores.

The condition can also be caused by a lack of certain nutrients. Those with an iron deficiency known as anemia are more likely to develop the disease. Deficiencies of vitamin B-2, B-3, B-6 and B12 can also cause the disorder. Allergic reactions to tooth pastes and certain cosmetics can also cause the disorder. Certain drinks like orange juice can make it worse.

Immune system deficiencies like those that occur from being infected with HIV can also cause the disease. The inability to fight infection properly makes it much easier to develop the condition. Frequent sun exposure also puts you at risk for this condition. Losing your teeth or ill fitting dentures can cause the disease as well. If the facial muscles are not supported then the lips sag and allow moisture and food to get caught in the corners of the mouth. Increased moisture in the corners of the mouth makes for the perfect environment for the growth of fungus.

In infants and young children the condition can be developed in several ways. Thumb sucking and sucking on pacifiers can cause the disease through frequent rubbing in the area and increased moisture. Bottle feeding can also cause the disease. If you have infants or young children be sure to check the corners of their mouth for the development of the condition.
