I have been suffering on and off from angular cheilitis for the past 2 months or so. I am a vegetarian and I am considering that a vitamin deficiency may be the cause, although I have not eaten meat in 3 years. It is really hard to deal with, as I can't open my mouth more than just a small amount without pain. Eating, talking, laughing, and smiling are all very painful. And even when my mouth is closed completely I still feel a burning on the sides. This has been very difficult as I am a singer and have found it very uncomfortable to sing. I am going to start trying some of the home cures listed on this site. Hopefully they will help sooth the burning and pain and, in a best case scenario, cure the angular cheilitis altogether. Thank you for all the information about angular cheilitis you have provided!-Steven

I have this awful condition and unfortunately developed it when I got sick in the fall of 2006 with ME/CFS and Narcolepsy. I had never had anything itch like that, EVER, so I scratched at it awake or asleep, then my tongue broke out and for two years I dealt with pain and itching that on the scale of 1-10, 10 being the worst, both were a 20! The Cheilitis has scared my face. On once side it itched so bad that it scarred from me scratching way under my chin. The thing is the cheilitis is just as bad and I can't stop scratching no matter what. Now I have OCD!! Ugh!
The madness never stops. And two weeks ago I had a biopsy finally on my tongue because the pain is no longer 24/7 and I find out tomorrow if it is cancer or not. I don't smoke, haven't and don't drink and haven't but that doesn't mean a thing these days. My oral surgeon gave me an Rx for an Antimicrobial mouthwash IN CASE I have systemic Thrush (yeast). This is the worst stuff I've ever had. I thank you for your site.

Wow what a great site. Very informative!!

I found out that it takes 1 - 2 days for a cold sore to appear and you will feel burning and itching sensations before it shows up on your lip.

Well here's my story and what i said above connects to it. I drool in my sleep so i woke up one morning and the corner of my mouth was wet. When it's wet bacteria will form. At that time i wiped my mouth dry and scratched it cause it was itchy (Bad move). Guess what happened? It turned all red, got itchier and started to burn! I looked in the mirror and it was too late, the bump has formed into tiny blisters. I thought it was no big deal so i used soap on the area and left it alone. Next day it looked worst.... but i still ignored it thinking it'll go away by tomorrow.

Another day past and this time it started to scab. Since cold sores and angular cheilitis can look the same and appear in similar areas I was really scared and actually assumed it was a cold sore. I went to the doctors next day and asked him to check it, no blood test or anything just a look. He seemed very unprofessional, looked for 4 seconds and said hm... right when he was about to speak i just had to ask him IS IT A COLD SORE DOCTOR??? i guess i should of let him tell me... now he thinks i get them and will just give me any answer. He said yes it's a cold sore i will prescribe you a cream. I was so upset that day because i never had herpes and thought no girls would ever date me. I told my mom what happened and she said no silly, it's just from drooling. She was saying how the doctor was unprofessional and didn't even examine me enough to prove that it was really a cold sore. anyways.... as i was researching up on the net i found angular cheilitis. I was like hey what if it's angular cheilitis instead of a cold sore? Doctors can be wrong too their human justl ike us. This site really matches what i have at the corner of my mouth. Come to think about it... if it was a cold sore it would had burn and itch for a day or two before it actually appear. I never felt any of this on the day before until the next morning. It just appeared 5 mins later after the itch and burn so it couldn't have been herpes.

I like how this site explains how the saliva can collect bacteria and multiply it self because now i understand clearly why i have this problem from drooling at night. Anyways if some of you think i'm crazy go ahead i'm just sharing a story. Just to let some of you know don't always believe what you hear before you really positive and sure of something yourself like what happened to me. I mean cold sore isn't a big deal but it's scary cause it can spread. Yes it's herpes and probably 90% of the population is already affect by it so no worries even if you have it. NOT A BIG DEAL but for those who do get blisters and such like me from drooling, don't worry!! i might just be Angular Cheilitis... like the site says.. "It often is mistaken for cold sores and others think it might be contagious but it is not" they are very alike, they both can scab, blister, and appear in similar areas. Don't get it wrong!

I hope i got most of your paranoia out if you have a similar situation like me.

Be happy no worries.
